Sample Curriculum for the Certificate Program:
Anatomy class 6 of 48 on joints:
- Terms for movements (flexion/extension...)
- Types of Joints: historical immovable joints (synarthroses), slightly movable joints (amphiarthroses) examples in cranium, sacroiliac, pubic symphysis, intervertebral (some have fibrocartilage disc separating bones), and freely movable joints (diarthroses)
- 6 types of freely movable joints (look at shapes & how this directs movement possibilities; try isolating joints & checking out what kinds of movements are possible; give examples of each):
- ball & socket allows everything, including rotation;
- condyloid does not permit rotation;
- gliding allows gliding & twisting;
- hinge allows flexion/extension;
- pivot allows only rotation;
- saddle permits various moves (see diagrams)
- Components of freely movable joints: joint capsule of ligaments, synovial membrane, hyaline cartilage covering ends of articulating bones, synovial fluid filling joint cavity, various cushioning possibilities (fat, bursa, fibrocartilage discs, meniscus-'semilunar cartilage')
- Look at specific joints: hip, shoulder, knee, elbow (see diagrams)
